True Freedom- Wisdom , Meaning and the Power to rise above circumstances

Epictetus was born a slave, which was a life of deep suffering and hardship. He was even physically hurt by his master and walked with a limp for the rest of his life. One might think he would carry bitterness and pain forever. But instead, he became one of the wisest people in history, with a powerful message about what it really means to be free.

In ancient Rome, people believed that only the free could be educated. But Epictetus saw the opposite: Many so-called “free” people were trapped by their anger, selfish desires, fear, and ignorance. Even powerful people, like those in Emperor Nero’s court, were emotionally and spiritually enslaved.
Epictetus taught that true freedom comes from wisdom.
It’s not about external conditions whether you're rich or poor, slave or emperor but about your inner world.
True freedom is when you're no longer ruled by your emotions, your impulses, or your false beliefs.
It’s when you can face life calmly, with clarity and purpose.
He said the goal of wisdom is to live with peace inside to stop arguing, stop being angry, stop being reactive to live a life that flows smoothly.
The Stoics, like Epictetus and Marcus Aurelius, believed wisdom doesn’t come automatically. It has to be earned through learning, reflecting, being honest with yourself, listening to wise people, and even through suffering and challenges.

In Logotherapy, we say that no matter what situation you are in even in great suffering you still have the freedom to choose your attitude and find meaning.
Like  Frankl, who found meaning in a concentration camp, Epictetus found meaning and wisdom in slavery. Both teach us that freedom is not the absence of suffering or hardship it is the ability to respond to it with purpose and clarity.
In Logotherapy, we call this freedom of will and self-transcendence the power to rise above your circumstances and connect with something greater.
So, wisdom and meaning go hand in hand.
When you live with purpose, guided by your values and conscience, you are no longer a prisoner of your emotions or your past.

You become truly free.
